In an interview, Jeff Bezos shared how a visit to a 300-year-old brewery helped him imagine Amazon Web Services.
At the brewery, he saw an old power generator and asked why it was there.
The guide told him:
“Back then, there was no power grid. We had to generate our own electricity.”
That sentence clicked. Bezos realized:
🧠 “The internet is in the same stage. Everyone is building their own servers — like building their own power grids.”
It didn’t make sense for every business to manage servers, just like it didn’t make sense for every factory to build power plants once a grid existed.
So he thought:
What if we became the power grid for the internet?
That idea became AWS — scalable, pay-as-you-go infrastructure for anyone building online.
Bezos’ advice to founders and devs:
Focus on what makes your beer taste better.
In other words: let someone else handle the plumbing so you can focus on what truly matters.
Whether you’re shipping apps or running startups —
remember that great ideas can start in unexpected places.
Sometimes even at a brewery. 🍺⚙️
