Just a few hours ago, I’ve attended a talk by Vidya of Writing OS.
Yes, you guessed it right, her newsletter The Curious Bunch is a popular one.
In her talk “How To Write Effectively & Consistently” hosted by Career Leap, she busted a few myths about writing.
Though she talked about social media presence and writing in general, I am taking her tips on the blogging side.
Myth 1: Niche vs Multiple topics
Vidya says you can be specific about your topics that are related to your niche or main area of interest.
But you don’t have to restrict yourself.
She recommends being yourself when it comes to writing
If your interests are not related to each other, then consider keeping it a separate blog than mixing them. This might be annoying to your audience.
Myth 2: Criticism vs validation
When you publish something, anyone who reads it might criticize you. Don’t be afraid to get judged, that is not under your control.
What you write and how are you improving is under your control
What you need is little validation from your friends, audience, or anyone who would be interested in reading your article.
She mentioned how Dickie Bush uses short posts or tweets to validate the blog post idea before actually working on them.
Myth 3: Daily vs Regularly
Writing should be a daily habit. We hear this all the time. But in reality, it doesn’t have to be. If you are occupied with other important things and don’t have time for writing, it is okay!
Instead of writing daily, write regularly.
Let’s say you want to publish 2 blog posts a week, that’s great than trying to push yourself hard every day.
Myth 4: Novelty vs curated content
We all think that our content should be original and the best one out there on the internet. But in reality, it is not feasible.
You can be a curator and still provide value to your readers.
Her newsletter with curated content and her summary earned her $$$$ than her personal blog.
