Every platform you open today has already decided what it thinks you want.
YouTube knows what you watched last night.
Instagram knows what you paused on.
Even your email inbox knows what you almost bought.
This is not new.
This is just how marketing works now.
But here is the part most people miss.
The algorithm is not your enemy.
It is a mirror.
It shows you more of whatever you already gave attention to.
Watch fitness videos for three days, and your feed turns into a gym.
Watch startup stories for a week, and every ad starts selling you a course.
You can fight this.
Or you can use it.
I stopped seeing it as something happening to me.
I started seeing it as something I could point.
Want to lose weight?
Watch fitness content on purpose for a week.
Let the machine learn that about you.
Want to build a business?
Feed it founder interviews and case studies.
Let it flood you with exactly that.
This is not manipulation.
This is direction.
Seth Godin once said something close to this.
Don’t fight the tide, dance with it.
The algorithm is a tide.
Most people get pulled by it without noticing.
A few learn to steer with it instead.
But there is a second layer to this, and it matters just as much.
The One Place The Algorithm Doesn’t Reach
Not everywhere is optimized to hook you.
Newsletters are different.
RSS feeds are different.
You subscribe once.
You get exactly what you asked for.
No feed deciding what else you should see today.
Yes, some newsletters carry ads.
But they are usually written for everyone on the list, not tuned to your specific fears and cravings.
That difference is bigger than it sounds.
A feed is built to hold your attention as long as possible.
A newsletter is built to deliver one idea and let you go.
One wants your time.
The other respects it.
This is why I still write here.
Not because it reaches more people.
Because it reaches the right people, on their terms, not the platform’s.
What This Means For You
You cannot opt out of being tracked.
You can decide what you are tracked doing.
Feed the algorithm the person you are becoming, not the person you were at 1am scrolling.
And for the parts of your life you want untouched by outside pressure, find your newsletters.
Find your RSS feeds.
Build a small corner of the internet that answers only to you.
The algorithm will always be there.
The question is whether you are dancing with it, or just being dragged.
