Diwali, Sweets, and a Little Bit of Temptation

So, it’s Diwali time.

Everywhere you look, there’s a mountain of sweets and a sea of oily, tasty food. It’s probably the most food-heavy time of the year. And yes, it’s all delicious. But let’s be real: it’s not exactly what the doctor ordered if you want to stay healthy.

Now, you might wonder: how do you handle all these temptations?

Should you just skip the treats? Refuse the gifts? Avoid that snack sitting right on your desk, the one your colleague brought specially for you?

Honestly, at 37, I’m just enjoying it a bit.

Maybe it’s a guilty pleasure. Sure, the books like “Outlive” tell us that what we eat now will shape how we feel decades later. The science is clear. The data doesn’t lie. Our future selves are probably shaking their heads at us right now.

But here’s the thing.

Diwali comes once a year. The festivals that connect us to our roots, our people, our memories don’t show up on a schedule we control. And maybe, just maybe, it’s okay to indulge a little.

I’m not saying throw caution to the wind. I’m not advocating for a sugar coma that lasts till January. But there’s something about saying yes to that homemade gulab jamun your mom made. Something about sharing a plate of chakli with your team. Something human about it.

The research will still be there tomorrow. The discipline can return next week. The gym isn’t going anywhere.

What won’t wait? This moment. This festival. This one time in the year when we pause everything else and celebrate light, togetherness, and yes, really good food.

So here’s my take: enjoy it. Savor it. Don’t make it a habit, but don’t make it a burden either.

Balance isn’t about perfection in every single moment. It’s about knowing when to bend the rules a little without breaking them completely.

Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating.

May your festivals be bright, your sweets be sweet, and your guilt be minimal.

And when it’s over? We’ll get back to our healthier habits. Together.
